Since 2012, the village of Poppenhausen has had its own Love Lane, a hiking trail especially for lovers. Located on a trail on a hill above the village in the beautiful Rhön mountains, the 2.5 km trail leads past various installations on the subject of love. The „Liebesweg“ in Poppenhausen was the first love-themed path in Germany. The fact that the love path is, of all places, in Poppenhausen, always causes general amusement and salacious remarks, because "poppen" is a not-so-nice word for making love in German.
Of course, the community, which was first mentioned in 826, was not named after this word. Rather, the name of a nobleman named Poppo, who lived in this place, should have led to the naming, but this is not proven. It would improve things only slightly, since "Poppo" is a nicer word for ass in the German language.
But back to the „Liebesweg“. The romantic atmosphere along the path with its installations for lovers is complemented by the beautiful view of the surrounding area. Visitors can find out all marriage anniversaries on a plaque. On another plaque, the phrase "I love you" is translated into 100 languages. And again on another panel you can find different quotes about love. Various love benches, a couple's swing and an ergonomically shaped lounger for two invite the hikers to linger and enjoy the view. In addition, there is the love lock heart, where lovers can attach their locks, the lucky clover, a view heart, parabolic mirrors that transmit whispered words between lovers over a distance of 40 meters and much more. Tripods for taking couple photos with a self-timer are also installed. And for some time now it has even been possible to get married on the “path of love”. All in all, a nice idea.
