Box Hill War Memorial honours Australians lost across multiple wars

The sight and sound of the bugle, a simple brass instrument, is one that many associate with remembrance. This memorial, in the middle of Box Hill Park, acts as a poignant symbol to remember local lives lost in World War I.

The monument was erected in 1922 and unveiled by the local Governor-General Lord Forster. The names of those who lost their lives during the war are commemorated on a plaque, all listed individually. The marble soldier stands holding a bugle to his lips and sits on a granite column. It was erected by the Council of the Shire of Nunawading.

A wall has been erected in the area surrounding the memorial, and on this wall now lie several plaques that pay tribute to lives lost in other wars in which Australian citizens have served.

There is also another sculpture at the site that is equally as poignant and pays tribute to lives lost in World War II. This depicts a soldier carrying a wounded comrade on his back and has the word 'Kokoda Trail' written underneath. This symbolizes the Kokoda Trail campaign, part of the Pacific War of WWII, which consisted of several battles fought from July to November 1942 in the then Australian Territory of Papua.
