China bans AI romantic companions — ByteDance and Tencent shut down services

China's Cyberspace Administration (CAC) and four government departments enforced new rules from July 15, 2025, banning AI tools from inducing emotional dependence or forming virtual relationships, including with minors. Tech giants ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba have shut down their AI companion platforms — including ByteDance's popular Doubao — leaving millions of users experiencing what commentators are calling a nationwide virtual breakup. Therapists have broadly welcomed the ban as beneficial for mental health and real-life social connections.
