Railway Works Unearth Coin of Carausius, the Self-Proclaimed 'Emperor of the North', From 286 AD

Archaeologists working on a railway construction project in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire have unearthed a silver denarius bearing the name of Carausius, a Roman officer who proclaimed himself ruler of the breakaway state of Britannia in 286 AD and reigned until 293 AD. The coin dates from the period of the so-called Britannic Empire, a secessionist state that split from the Roman Empire.
