Isotopes in Teeth of Africans Rescued from Slave Ships on St. Helena Trace Their Origins
Researchers analysed remains buried on St. Helena, the Atlantic island where the British military housed Africans "liberated" from slave ships in the 19th century. Isotope analysis of their teeth traced the victims' origins to inland regions of present-day Angola and Zimbabwe. Despite being officially freed, thousands of these Africans died on the island.
