Nearly half of ransomware victims pay up as UK plans ban on public sector payments

According to 2025 research by Sophos, nearly half of companies hit by ransomware end up paying the ransom, with the median amount demanded continuing to rise. The UK government is advancing plans to ban ransomware payments by public sector bodies and critical national infrastructure, including the NHS, local councils and schools. Ransomware attackers have grown more sophisticated, increasingly targeting vulnerable small and medium-sized businesses.
