Ford fires up its 5.4-litre V8 for its 2027 Le Mans LMDh hypercar

Ford’s long-awaited hybrid Le Mans hypercar has a 5.4-liter naturally-aspirated V8.

Track testing of the Ford hypercar will begin next month ahead of its 2027 debut.

The LMDh class will also welcome McLaren’s MCL-HY hypercar next year.

The world of endurance racing is about to get even more exciting. Ford will make its eagerly-awaited return to the highest tier of closed-wheel motorsport next year, racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with its all-new LMDh hypercar. While its racing debut is still a while away, Ford has started teasing the car and its engine.

An initial teaser was shared online earlier this month, coinciding with the July 4 celebrations. This brief video offered us a look at the car’s wild silhouette and dramatic aerodynamic design, while also previewing the engine sound.

Visually, it’s too early to judge the final design of Ford’s hypercar, although we can obviously see it has a towering rear wing and shark fin, a roof scoop, and a slender front fascia, just like all other cars it’ll compete against have.

The Coyote Goes Racing

The latest teaser is perhaps even more exciting. It explicitly focuses on the engine, based on its beloved Coyote V8 found in the Mustang, but upgraded to 5.4 liters while remaining naturally aspirated. The engine sounds mean as hell, coming close to matching the intoxicating V8 growl of Cadillac’s hypercar . Working alongside the 5.4-liter V8 will be a hybrid system.

Ford won’t be the only new entrant into the burgeoning LMDh class next year. Also premiering in 2027 will be the McLaren MCL-HY , its very own hypercar powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and a hybrid system. This year, Genesis joined the class with its GMR-001, joining existing entrants from Lamborghini, Alpine, Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, and Acura. These cars also race along the LMH cars, fielded by Toyota, Glickenhaus, Peugeot, Ferrari, Vanwall, Isotta Fraschini, and Aston Martin.

Ford plans to start on-track testing of its hypercar next month, taking it to several circuits across Europe. Two cars will be fielded into the championship, driven by Matt Campbell, Nick Yelloly, Tom Blomqvist, Mike Rockenfeller, Logan Sargeant, and Sebastian Priaulx.
