Alzheimer's study restores two hours of sleep by removing overactive brain immune cells

Researchers have identified overactive microglia — the brain's immune cells — as a key cause of sleep loss in mice with Alzheimer's disease. These cells trigger inflammation that prevents deep, restorative sleep; temporarily removing most of them restored over two hours of sleep per day even though amyloid plaques remained intact. The findings suggest new therapeutic approaches for Alzheimer's-related sleep disruption that do not rely on clearing brain plaques.
