Young sauropod dinosaurs could rear up on hind legs, study finds

Digital simulations of two elephant-sized South American sauropods revealed their unusually robust femurs could withstand the enormous forces of rearing up on their hind legs, especially when young. The ability appears to have been lost as the animals grew larger and heavier. The upright posture likely helped them reach treetops, deter predators, or attract mates.
