Post-menopausal ovaries have immune functions, Northwestern University study finds
Research by Dr Francesca Duncan at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine shows that ovaries do not become redundant after menopause but instead take on immune functions. The discovery was made accidentally during a National Institutes of Health project mapping senescent cells — cells that stop dividing but remain metabolically active — in ageing tissues. The findings could significantly reshape understanding of older women's health.
