Iowa Medicaid Audit: PBM Made Over $100M by Obscuring Drug Costs
An audit of Iowa's Medicaid programme found that a large pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) appeared to have made over $100 million by adjusting payments to pharmacies without passing savings back to state-contracted managed care plans. The review covered 2019 to 2021 and exposed sophisticated accounting manoeuvres used to obscure drug costs. Similar findings had previously emerged in audits of other US states.
