"A Useful Ghost" — Thai Cannes hit blends ghosts and politics to great effect
"A Useful Ghost" is the debut feature of 39-year-old Thai director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke, which won the critics' week grand prize at Cannes. The supernatural black comedy follows an unquiet spirit inhabiting a vacuum cleaner and explores Thailand's traumatic political history: the 2010 military crackdown, coups in 2006 and 2014, and the 1976 Thammasat University demonstrations. Critics praise its visual elegance, dreamlike compositions and artistic confidence.
