Cancer cells evolve like species – Darwin helps explain tumour growth
Nick James's book "Nowotwór złośliwy", published by Łódź University Press, argues that cancer develops as an evolutionary process: successive cell populations accumulate mutations, compete for resources and adapt to the body's environment. Cancer cells undergo natural selection – those best suited to the tumour's environment survive. Metastases can differ genetically from the primary tumour, complicating treatment.
