Acuario Inbursa: Latin America's largest aquarium buried 26 metres underground

Carlos Slim, the Mexican magnate, through his financial group Inbursa, built the largest aquarium in Latin America in what was once a road triangle. In addition to withstanding earthquakes, it is 26 meters underground and houses an unusual collection of marine species.

The aquarium tells a story, as the journey begins in the deepest part of the property. The largest fish tank corresponds to the seabed, and as one goes up, it reaches the reefs, the beach, the mangroves and the Arctic. That's why it has 4 floors.

The whole site is also a theatrical visit because the place is decorated as a sunken ship, lost ruins in the jungle, or the interior of a submarine.

The more than 350 species it houses are peculiar (and unusual for a city far away from the sea): jellyfish, manta rays, piranhas, penguins, giant turtles, sharks. At every step, they become weirder, from poisonous frogs and puffer fish to live corals, octopuses and strange clams.

To keep it in perfect working order, 22 million liters of salt water were taken from the beaches of Veracruz. But p erhaps the most curious thing about the site is that its rooms can be rented for private events such as weddings, banquets or social parties, in addition to making underwater marriage proposals. A s if that were not enough, on the last Wednesday of the month (when the Night of Museums of Mexico City takes place), it performs concerts and cultural events included in the entrance ticket.
