Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold benefits

The Sapphire Preferred offers solid perks for its $95 annual fee. These include a $100 annual hotel credit for bookings through Chase Travel and a complimentary DoorDash DashPass membership (activate by Dec. 31, 2027).

The card also includes a credit of up to $120 every four years toward Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or Nexus, as well as one year of complimentary Apple TV access (activate by Dec. 31).

Other benefits include travel protections such as rental car insurance , trip delay and cancellation insurance and baggage delay insurance. Hopefully, you'll never need them, but they can provide significant value when your travel doesn't go as planned.

Up to $120 in dining credits each calendar year: Receive up to $10 a month in statement credits for purchases with your Amex Gold at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Buffalo Wild Wings, Wonder and Five Guys.

Up to $100 in statement credits for purchases made at Resy restaurants per calendar year : Receive up to $50 in statement credits semiannually for eligible Resy purchases and dining at U.S. Resy restaurants; just pay with your card to receive the credit. No reservation is required.

These statement credits total up to $424 annually. If you'll naturally use them, they more than offset the card's annual fee. If not, their real-world value is much lower.

The Amex Gold's annual fee is $230 higher than the Sapphire Preferred's. If you'll naturally use more than $230 in annual statement credits, that higher fee is easy to justify. Otherwise, the Sapphire Preferred likely offers better overall value.

Winner : Amex Gold. It's easier to offset the annual fee if you naturally use the statement credits.

Before reaching the spending caps, earning 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets is an 8% return on both purchases, according to TPG's valuations. That makes it one of the best cards for dining at restaurants worldwide and grocery shopping within the U.S.

Winner: Amex Gold. Its higher earning rates on dining worldwide, at U.S. supermarkets and on flights booked directly with an airline give it the upper hand.

Redeeming points on the Sapphire Preferred vs. Amex Gold

Both cards earn highly valuable transferable rewards.The Sapphire Preferred earns Ultimate Rewards points, which you can redeem through Chase Travel, transfer to one of Chase's 14 hotel and airline partners, or use for gift cards and statement credits. With the Points Boost feature , you'll get up to 1.75 cents per point on select Chase Travel bookings, but transferring points to travel partners typically provides the greatest value.

TPG credit cards writer Augusta Stone often transfers her Sapphire Preferred points to World of Hyatt , one of the most valuable hotel loyalty programs.

Meanwhile, TPG credit cards editor Olivia Mittak has transferred her Membership Rewards points to partners, including Air Canada Aeroplan and Delta SkyMiles.

Winner : Tie. Both cards transfer to various partners, each with its own redemption options and sweet spots.

Should I get the Sapphire Preferred or Amex Gold?

The right card depends largely on where your money goes each month. Here's which card fits four common spending patterns:

Travel a few times a year and want to keep costs low

If you travel a few times a year but don't want to juggle multiple monthly credits or pay a high annual fee, the Sapphire Preferred is likely the better fit. Its travel protections, valuable bonus categories and $95 annual fee make it an excellent all-around travel card.

Spend at least $500 a month on dining and groceries

If you regularly spend several hundred dollars each month dining out and shopping at U.S. supermarkets, the Amex Gold will usually provide the greatest long-term value thanks to its 4-points-per-dollar earning rates and statement credits.

Spend more on travel than groceries

If much of your spending goes toward gas, EV charging, streaming services, vacation rentals and general travel rather than supermarkets, the Sapphire Preferred's bonus categories are broader and easier to maximize.

You'll use at least $230 in Amex Gold credits each year

If you already use Uber, dine at Resy restaurants, visit Dunkin' and order from eligible dining partners, the Amex Gold's statement credits can more than offset its higher annual fee, making it the stronger long-term choice.

Bottom line

Both the Sapphire Preferred and the Amex Gold earn valuable transferable rewards in popular spending categories and offer strong benefits.

While these cards complement each other well, most readers will be better off starting with the Sapphire Preferred thanks to its lower annual fee and Chase's 5/24 rule . You can always add the Amex Gold later if its dining rewards and statement credits fit your spending habits.

American Airlines' new Flagship business-class suites are expanding to another set of its airplanes.

The Fort Worth-based carrier on Monday confirmed it plans to install the suites — which are complete with sliding privacy doors — on its fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners.

It'll be a nice upgrade for the business-class cabin on those jets.

Currently, American's 787-8s do have lie-flat pods with 100% direct-aisle access.

But the new seats they're getting will be the latest-generation Flagship product that American debuted just over a year ago on its larger 787-9 planes.

It's not just business-class getting a glow-up.

The 787-8s are slated for a larger cabin refresh, which CNBC's Leslie Josephs was first to report over the weekend.

Expect those planes to get the sleeker new-look interior that the airline has been rolling out across an array of aircraft, which includes brighter blue seats in economy.

These upgrades to American's 787-8s will also give frequent AA flyers another fleet type with the airline's newest, most state-of-the-art premium product up front.

American first introduced the Flagship Suites last year on some of its newly delivered 787-9 Dreamliners.

But it remains a bit of a unicorn seat offering today, as only a small handful of planes sport the new suites.

You'll find the new Flagship product on 11 of those Boeing 787-9s right now — not to mention on Americana's brand-new, single-aisle Airbus A321XLRs.

Later this year, American expects to debut the Flagship Suites on its largest plane, the Boeing 777-300ER, and 20 of those jets are slated for retrofitting in the coming years. Additionally, 47 of its 777-200ERs are also in line for the new cabin and Flagship product.

Now, add the carrier's 37 787-8 Dreamliners to the mix.

American did not announce timing for these new retrofits, but did offer this comment:

"We look forward to providing customers with an elevated premium travel experience on our wide-body fleet," an airline spokesperson told TPG.

Premium arms race

American's planned on-board upgrades come in the middle of a proverbial arms race, of sorts, among the largest U.S. airlines: The goal is to win big-spending customers over with luxe seats, lounges and other bells and whistles.

Earlier this year, United Airlines unveiled its next-generation Polaris business-class product on a plane that sports a whopping 99 premium seats.

Looking ahead

Something worth watching is just how many business-class suites American decides to configure its 787-8s.

Those planes currently have 20 lie-flat beds.

The airline leaned much more heavily into premium, though, with the newest 787-9s, which sport 51 suites, including eight extra-spacious Flagship Suite Preferred seats in the two bulkhead rows.

The 787-8 will likely have fewer business-class suites than the larger 787-9 variant. But don't be surprised if the carrier makes its front cabin bigger than what those planes have right now.

Toyota faces a proposed class action over website tracking.

Plaintiff says declining cookies changed nothing on the site.

The claim leans on a wiretapping law written in 1967.

Clicking “decline” on a cookie banner carries an implied promise that the site will stop following you around. A new lawsuit claims Toyota’s American website treated that click as a formality.

The proposed class action, filed last week at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, accuses the automaker of tracking Toyota.com visitors after they rejected third-party cookies through the consent banner the site itself put in front of them. Lead plaintiff Brittany Conner says tracking technology landed on users’ devices regardless of what they chose, handing third parties their browsing activity, device details, and online identifiers for targeted advertising.

At the center of the complaint is fingerprinting, a method of identifying an individual by assembling device and browsing characteristics into a signature unique enough to follow across the web, no cookie required. According to the filing, Toyota deployed those tools after visitors selected “decline” on the banner.

Toyota is far from the only company dealing with this kind of issue. The suit is built around the California Invasion of Privacy Act, a law enacted in 1967 to address wiretapping and phone surveillance, which plaintiffs’ firms are now repurposing to target modern website tracking. While this act was conceived decades before the World Wide Web, it’s proven effective enough that more than 800 CIPA suits were filed in 2025 alone, reports Fox Business.

Toyota isn’t the first big name swept up in this, and it won’t be the last. Forbes Media settled a similar “trap and trace” claim for $10 million two months ago, while the Los Angeles Times handed over $3.85 million to make its own version of the problem disappear

Pacific Trial Attorneys, the firm representing Conner, didn’t respond to Fox Business’ request for comment. Toyota has stayed quiet as well.
