Tossing and turning in bed and trying to force sleep are among the worst responses to insomnia, according to a prominent neurologist. Instead, experts recommend getting out of bed and doing a calm activity until drowsiness returns — a technique known as stimulus control. The bed should be associated only with sleep, not with lying awake watching the clock.
