Michigan State scientists warn AI could misidentify non-life as alien life

Researchers Christoph Adami and a colleague from Michigan State University warn that AI systems searching for alien life could easily misclassify non-life as life, due to a known weakness with "out-of-distribution" samples unlike those seen during training. Adami, a computational biologist, tested AI using his Avida program — a 1993 simulation in which digital organisms replicate and compete. He argues life can be defined by its ability to encode and replicate information, but AI struggles to apply such criteria to truly novel forms.
