Atmosphere detected for first time on rocky exoplanet LHS 1140 b in habitable zone

Scientists have for the first time detected an atmosphere around a rocky exoplanet located in its star's habitable zone — LHS 1140 b, a so-called "super-Earth" roughly 48 light-years away. The planet orbits a red dwarf star at a distance that could allow liquid water to exist on its surface. The discovery, published in the journal Science, is seen as a potential milestone in the search for life beyond our Solar System.
