James Webb Telescope uses gravitational lensing to probe the universe's farthest galaxies

The James Webb Space Telescope has captured an image of the galaxy cluster MACS J0553.4-3342 in the constellation Columba, exploiting gravitational lensing first predicted by Einstein around 100 years ago. Massive celestial objects curve spacetime, bending and magnifying light from the oldest, faintest galaxies in the universe. The image was shared in July 2026.
