Shia Islam: born in Karbala, followed by 10–13% of Muslims worldwide
Shia Islam represents 10–13% of the world's Muslim population and takes its name from "Shi'at Ali," meaning the party of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet Muhammad's cousin. Shia Muslims believe Ali's succession was decreed directly by God and announced publicly by Muhammad. The Shia identity was forged through the tragedy at Karbala and developed its own distinct theology, rituals and ethics of survival.
