Asteroid that killed the dinosaurs identified as rare CO chondrite

Scientists have identified the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago as likely a CO chondrite — an exceptionally rare type from a distant part of the solar system. Its unusual chemistry indicates that planet-cooling dust and debris thrown into the atmosphere, rather than sulfur from within the asteroid itself, may have been the primary driver of mass extinction.
