Whalley Abbey Gatehouse: a medieval monastery landmark in England
Whalley Abbey in Lancashire was founded by Cistercian monks in 1296. Its two-storey gatehouse, one of the first structures built, featured a vaulted ground floor with separate entrances for pedestrians and carts, and an upper room likely used as a guest chapel. The abbey was dissolved under Henry VIII, and the property was sold to Richard Assheton in 1553.
