Major franchises are having an unpredictable time at the box office right now; properties that would routinely knock it out of the park commercially are struggling, while titles that were released with minimal expectations are breaking out. The current number one movie on the domestic Pluto TV chart was released theatrically in 2023, the seventh installment of a long-running sci-fi action franchise that began in 2007. For nearly a decade, the franchise was spearheaded by Michael Bay , who later admitted that he may have overstayed his welcome. When the fifth installment underperformed both critically and commercially, Paramount decided to reboot the series with a new filmmaker.
