Poland's 2.5 million cesspits are polluting the Baltic Sea

Poland has one of the lowest sewage network connection rates among Baltic Sea countries. Around 2.5 million cesspits and home sewage systems operate across the country, and leaks or infrequent emptying contaminate groundwater and rivers flowing into the Baltic. The issue is described as an "invisible" pollution source because it is difficult to monitor and enforce.
