Scientists drill 1,268 m into ocean floor, find system powering the Lost City

Scientists completed one of the deepest ocean-floor drillings in oceanographic history, boring 1,268 metres into the rock beneath the Atlantic Ocean. They discovered the hydrothermal system that powers the so-called Lost City — a remarkable field of carbonate chimneys on the seafloor. The find sheds new light on deep-sea geological processes and conditions that could support life.
