Brooklyn's Old Stone House: site of a pivotal 1776 Revolutionary War battle

The Vechte-Cortelyou House, known as the Old Stone House, in Brooklyn was the scene of the first major battle after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in August 1776. British forces landed at Gravesend Bay and pushed American troops north; a larger flanking force came through Jamaica Pass, forcing a retreat. Around 400 Maryland troops were left to cover the escape near the house, with over 250 killed or captured.
