NASA identifies jugular vein stasis as top VTE risk factor in microgravity

In April 2026, NASA's Office of the Chief Health and Medical Officer convened a working group to assess updated VTE case data among astronauts. The group identified stasis in the left internal jugular vein as the dominant risk factor for venous thromboembolism in microgravity. New evidence-based clinical practice recommendations were developed to mitigate the risk during spaceflight.
