Hackers breached DHS network after intrusion alerts were twice dismissed as false positives

Hackers gained unfettered access to HSIN, the US Department of Homeland Security's primary information-sharing network, for roughly three weeks after analysts twice dismissed intrusion alerts as false positives. The attackers modified server files, ran malicious code, stole credential files, installed backdoors and deleted logs to cover their tracks. The breach was officially declared on June 4, 2026.
