Perseid meteor shower active now — peaks August 12 alongside solar eclipse

The Perseid meteor shower is active from July 17 through August 24 — not only around its peak. The maximum occurs on August 12 under moonless skies, coinciding with a total solar eclipse whose totality crosses eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain; much of Europe will see a deep partial eclipse. Astronomers urge stargazers to look up well before the peak, not just on one night.
