90 years ago in Spain, Germany rehearsed the weapons and tactics of WWII

Exactly 90 years ago, the Spanish Civil War broke out in south-west Europe — an event historian David Keys argues marks the real start of the Second World War. It was there that Germany tested its aircraft, tanks and blitzkrieg tactics later used across Europe. The conflict served as Hitler's proving ground before his wider global aggression.
