LHC observes new phenomenon in quark-gluon plasma echoing the early universe

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have for the first time observed a long-sought phenomenon inside quark-gluon plasma — a hot, dense particle "soup" resembling the state of the universe fractions of a second after the Big Bang. The plasma is created by smashing heavy atomic nuclei such as lead together at near-light-speed, freeing quarks and gluons that are otherwise always bound inside protons and neutrons. The observation, described as "a culmination of a decades-long quest," could shed new light on the universe's earliest moments.
