Germany to join French nuclear exercise for first time to boost defence ties
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Friday that Germany will participate in a French nuclear exercise later this year, an unprecedented step in bilateral defence cooperation. The announcement came after talks with French President Emmanuel Macron at an air base near Cologne. The two countries will also continue developing the cloud system from the joint FCAS fighter jet project, despite the broader FCAS programme collapsing earlier in 2026.
