Canadian wildfire smoke chokes 109 million Americans — Chicago and Detroit warn residents indoors

Wildfire smoke from blazes in Ontario, Canada spread again across the US midwest, mid-Atlantic and north-east, affecting around 109 million people. Residents of Chicago and Detroit were warned to stay indoors and reduce physical activity after the Air Quality Index hit a "hazardous" 361, according to the government site AirNow. The smoke caused irritated eyes, pungent air and widespread poor air quality across the affected regions.
