Andy Burnham becomes Labour leader with 2029 election already looming

Andy Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, has succeeded Keir Starmer as leader of the UK Labour Party. In his first speech, he pledged a programme of reindustrialisation and public control of key utilities. Both Labour and the Conservatives poll at 19%, five points behind Nigel Farage's Reform UK, with the next general election due by summer 2029.
