Polish surgeons perform world's first chimeric liver transplant using two donors

On May 11, 2026, a team led by Prof. Michał Grąt at the Medical University of Warsaw performed the world's first chimeric liver transplant on a 47-year-old patient with advanced liver cancer. The new organ was composed of two parts: a modified segment of the patient's own liver and a portion from a deceased donor, combining autotransplantation and allotransplantation techniques. The procedure was deemed necessary due to the extent of the tumour, which ruled out conventional transplant approaches.
