FCC Approves Test Launch of Eärendil-1 Space Reflector Satellite
The US Federal Communications Commission has approved the first test launch of Reflect Orbital's Eärendil-1 satellite, which will carry an 18-by-18-metre reflector to beam sunlight back to Earth on demand. The company plans to deploy more than 50,000 such reflectors in low Earth orbit by 2035. Astronomers have raised significant concerns about the project's impact on night-sky observations.
