EU weakens carbon market: industry gets more free permits and longer to pollute

The European Commission released its long-awaited revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) on Friday after an all-night round of talks. The reform allows industry to continue emitting greenhouse gases well into the 2040s and grants more free pollution permits for longer, considerably slowing the pace of required emissions cuts. The proposal marks a significant dilution of climate ambition and is expected to trigger a fierce debate in Parliament between those seeking industry relief and those pushing for faster climate neutrality.
