AI designs new CRISPR enzymes not found in nature
Researchers have used artificial intelligence to create functional CRISPR enzymes that do not exist in nature, effectively designing new "molecular scissors" for gene editing. The breakthrough expands the toolkit available to scientists beyond what natural biology provides. The findings were published in Nature on 16 July 2026.
