England to screen all newborns for Spinal Muscular Atrophy

All newborn babies in England will be tested for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare and life-limiting muscle condition, as part of the standard heel prick screening test. The move was hailed as a "victory" by singer Jesy Nelson, who had previously campaigned for early SMA detection. Early diagnosis is critical for SMA, as treatment is most effective when given before symptoms appear.
