FCC Approves Orbital Mirror Satellite Test to Reflect Sunlight Toward Earth

The FCC has approved testing of the Eärendil-1 satellite built by California startup Reflect Orbital, which carries four thin-film reflectors each measuring around 18 metres. The satellite, to be placed in low Earth orbit, is designed to direct reflected sunlight toward specific areas on Earth, potentially extending daylight hours. Proposed applications include renewable energy support and emergency services. Astronomers have raised concerns that artificial sunlight could interfere with telescopic observations worldwide.
