Astronauts' muscle loss in space linked to mitochondrial dysfunction in microgravity

A study published in Nature on 16 July 2026 found that human cells cultured in microgravity produce fewer mitochondrial proteins, offering a key clue to why astronauts' bodies waste away in space. Researchers believe this mitochondrial dysfunction may underlie the muscle and organ deterioration observed during long stays on the International Space Station. The findings could guide new countermeasures to protect astronauts' health on future missions.
