Webb captures young galaxy cluster MACS J0553.4-3342 from 4.4 billion years ago

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captured an image on 3 July 2026 of the young galaxy cluster MACS J0553.4-3342, showing light that travelled 4.4 billion years to reach us. The cluster consists of two actively merging sub-clusters of roughly equal mass, each anchored by an immensely bright and massive elliptical galaxy visible as the two brightest points at the centre of the image, surrounded by large glowing halos. The image was credited to ESA/Webb, NASA, CSA and S. Fujimoto.
