US-Iran tensions push diesel above $5 a gallon, gas near $4
Average US diesel prices have risen again to over $5 a gallon, while regular gasoline is approaching $4, returning to highs seen before the June US-Iran memorandum of understanding, according to AAA data. A year ago, diesel averaged $3.72 a gallon — nearly $1.25 less than today. The spike reflects escalating tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and unpredictable rhetoric from both Washington and Tehran, hitting consumers and truckers hard.
