FCC proposes mandatory ID for prepaid phones, effectively banning burner phones in the US

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed rules requiring carriers and VoIP providers to collect a customer's name, address, government-issued ID number and an alternate phone number before activating or renewing service. This would effectively ban anonymous prepaid "burner" phones in the United States. Critics have called the proposal "misguided and counterproductive," warning it would harm people who need anonymity or lack the required ID or housing.
