ISS Study: Microgravity Reduces Mitochondrial Proteins in Human Cells

A study published in Nature on 16 July 2026 found that human cells cultured in microgravity aboard the International Space Station produced fewer mitochondrial proteins. The finding points to mitochondria as a key factor behind the physical deterioration astronauts experience in space. The research could inform future countermeasures for long-duration spaceflight.
