US Medicare proposes new payment framework for clinical AI and software
The US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed in July 2026 new payment rules for AI and clinical software tools as part of its 2027 hospital outpatient and physician fee proposals. While Medicare has long been adept at pricing physical items, it has lacked a consistent framework for algorithms — such as those predicting cardiac risk or mapping prostate cancer spread. The proposed changes aim to factor in the impact of digital tools on patient outcomes.
