Polish resident doctors earn up to PLN 25,000 gross a month with 12 extra shifts
Doctors in Poland can work with virtually no real limits on working hours, as extra on-call shifts go largely unmonitored. A resident taking 12 additional shifts a month can earn up to PLN 25,000 gross, far above their base salary. While the extra shifts plug staffing gaps in hospitals, they also contribute to staff exhaustion. Doctors say it is difficult to give up the higher income once accustomed to a better standard of living.
