Which countries hold reserves almost entirely in gold? Not the US or Germany
Data from the World Gold Council shows that countries with the highest share of gold in their reserves are not Western powers but nations hit by crises, sanctions or unconventional monetary policy, such as Venezuela and Tajikistan, where gold makes up over 90% of reserves. Even less than 50 tonnes can represent almost all of a small country's reserves. The US, Germany and China lead in absolute terms but rank far lower by proportion.
