First H5N1 Bird Flu Case in New Zealand Sparks Fear for Native Species

New Zealand confirmed its first-ever case of H5N1 bird flu on Wednesday, detected in a brown skua seabird found on Petone beach in Wellington on 10 July. Biosecurity minister Andrew Hoggard urged the public to report any groups of three or more sick or dead birds. Authorities fear the virus could devastate the country's unique and vulnerable native bird species if it spreads.
