NASA tests flight innovations using small subscale remotely piloted aircraft

NASA's Dale Reed Subscale Flight Research Laboratory at Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, uses small remotely piloted and autonomous aircraft as cost-effective platforms to test new aerospace concepts. The approach accelerates learning and reduces risk before advancing to full-scale aircraft. In October 2024, researchers tested an atmospheric probe model dropped from a quadrotor drone above Rogers Dry Lake.
